Stories from the street continued…

June 30, 2009

There are a few more stories I would like to share.  These are stories from members of our team and myself…

My most precious moment from Saturday has been on my mind ever since…There was a little boy in a wheel chair that came to the bus with his mother and grandmother.  I instantly noticed him and asked them if I could help them get their soup and drinks since they were pushing a wheel chair.  They went to the location under the tent where they would eat and I brought them three soups and iced tea.  This little boy was so sweet.  We believe he may have had cerebral palsy.  I wanted to take him home with me and be able to love on him like I would my son Brennan!  I was able to help him eat his lunch, my mom brought him some chocolates and he and I talked.  He was 10 1/2 years old, his birthday was in October, his favorite color was blue and he liked Spiderman.  :)  We had spent time coloring on the sidewalk with the other kids and sadly this was something he obviously could not do.  I asked him if he could spell his name and he spelled it to me while I wrote it on the sidewalk in blue sidewalk chalk.  His name was Yimbert…:)  I then wrote my name on the sidewalk as well.  I asked him if he would like his face painted and he smiled and said he would like a spiderman on his arm.  How sweet is that…:)  One of the things that we have each really struggled with is the kids.  You have now heard two stories of children on the street either homeless or in extreme poverty.  These are two of many…it was really hard to see so many kids.

Jo was very touched by the people that we saw at multiple stops during our trip.  The bus has a routine schedule so every Friday they go to Harlem for lunch and the Newark projects for dinner.  Every Saturday they go to the South Bronx.  The purpose of this is so that people know where they can get food and many people come to multiple stops.  There was a man named Rafael that was in Harlem on Friday and the South Bronx on Saturday.  There was also a man named Angel that was waiting for us at both Harlem and the South Bronx when we arrived at the stop.  Angel sat on the bus with us at both locations from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  He had developed a deep friendship with the folks on the NYC Relief bus.  One of the NYC Relief bus leaders would take Angel to movies, dinner, etc. and was taking him to the Social Security office on Monday morning to help straighten some things out.  Angel was maybe forty years old and was born with some learning disabilities.  At some point when he was younger his brother beat him with a baseball bat causing significant brain injuries..it truly saddens me to think about that.  Angel is just the sweetest person that really enjoys being around the relief bus.  We drove him home on the bus yesterday and I can tell you that we are all sad to see him go…

My mom shared a story that touched her at the beginning of lunch in the South Bronx.  She was serving the iced tea from the bus and had this moment where it was as if time stood still.  She was looking out on the sidewalks and saw all of the activities that our team was involved in.  My dad was talking to an older couple whom he carried soup for, others on our team were praying with people, some were playing with kids, others were handing out clothes, hygiene items, information on shelters, rehabilitation programs, etc.  Mom described this as a really incredible moment taking this all in…

Kathleen shared how it touched her having Mary and Anna working with us who were bilingual.  There assistance in communicating with people was essential and a true blessing!  Kathleen also was able to talk to one of the folks that worked with us, named Edwin, in the South Bronx.  Edwin shared that he was taking a mission trip to Cinncinati to serve in the inner city.

Eric shared a story about a man in the South Bronx who had a very bad cut on his arm.  Eric talked to him about getting some help and then Eric came to get my mom who is a nurse.  They gathered supplies and the two of them went out to bandage the wound.  Mom explained to his wife how to care for the wound after they left so that it could heal.  The man told my mom and Eric that he loved them…

Andrew shared how much he enjoyed see the kids happy and enjoying themselves at the bus.

We have arrived back in Indy safe and sound.  This trip has truly been the experience of a lifetime.  It has been a life changing few days…  Thank you so much for all the prayers while we were gone!

“We are just beggers showing other beggers to the bread…” A quote from Brennan Manning

June 27, 2009

Hi Everyone!  Another amazing day on the Relief Bus…God has been so good and we have had SO many moments of pure blessings over the past two days!

Today we served lunch in South Bronx.  To try and describe the South Bronx is difficult but I would like to try to paint you a picture.  Steve, our bus leader for the 2nd day said that the poverty there is astounding.  He also prepared us to meet some tough people.  With all of that, it was another beautiful day just overflowing with God’s presence.  We are all still absorbing the many blessings we have experienced but do have some special moments we would like to share…these are special moments that have touched our teams hearts today.  These were moments shared at dinner this evening…

My dad, Rick, shared a story of  a woman who flagged him over to her car on the street corner.  This woman was with her sister and nephew and asked for prayer.  My dad was able to talk to these three people who shared stories of their lives and their love for Christ.  The nephew had in the past been heavy into drugs.  He shared with my dad that he walked in on his mother praying for him one day and that day changed his life forever…

John shared a story about handing out flyers…there were a number of people blocks down the road that were very tough, hesitant to take flyers, unfriendly, etc.  Then he saw some of these same individuals come to the bus and let that tough guard down.  There was a change when they were in the presence of the bus and people who loved and cared for them.  These tough people were now polite, friendly, appreciative and able to be themselves.

Teresa shared a story of a woman that asked to be prayed with.  Her husband was assaulted by a police officer and unable to work due to his injuries.  She spoke very little English so Teresa got one of the bilingual volunteers, Anna, to help translate.  Even though the conversation was in Spanish, it quickly became apparent to Teresa when Anna put her hand over the woman’s heart that she was giving her life to Jesus.  Her husband then regave his life to Jesus…what more can I share about that.  Wow!

Kathleen shared a story from last night about a woman named Denise.  The woman came up when we were packing up last night to talk to Kathleen and Jo.  She appeared to be bi-polar or have some sort of mental condition and kept talking about needing a miracle.  Kathleen and Jo described this woman as very agitated.  She stuck around and circled up at the bus for our final prayer at the close of the night.  We all joined hands and during the prayer she was completely still and calm.  Kathleen and Jo then had the opportunity to pray with her after our group prayer and again she was very still and calm.  She came to the bus very agitated and left the bus peaceful and calm.  She stood there until the bus left…

Hailey shared a story about last night and some of the kids we met.  The projects where we were in Newark were very dangerous.  We were told that there had recently been a murder in which a woman was murdered, decapitated and hung in a tree.  At this location there were a lot of kids alone on the streets.  Hailey was able to put together treat bags of crayons, coloring books, candy, toothbrushes and story books.  There were two boys, ages 7 and 8 that Hailey, myself and my dad were going to walk home.  It was around the corner down the block.  It was dark and we were SO saddened by the fact that these little ones were out in the dark in this dangerous area by themselves.  We headed down the block and next thing we know the bus leader is running after us to stop us from leaving the bus area.  It was too dangerous for us to walk these young boys home…can you imagine?

These are only half the stories I have to share…I am out of time because we are going to a Hip Hop church service this evening.  I will be back after that to continue…There is no way that I can possibly describe these moments fully with my words but hopefully you can see how we have been blessed, how wonderful God is and how much opportunity there is to love people!  God is so good!  God continues to amaze me!

An amazing day in Harlem…

June 26, 2009

First let me introduce you to the NYC Team.  Teresa is the Team Leader and the followers are Jackie, John, Jo, Kathleen, Andrew, Micha, Hailey, Eric, Rick, Debbie and me (Kirsten).

We had an amazing day today…a day that is truly undescribable with words.  We served lunch today in Harlem…we prayed with people, talked to people, listened to people, loved people, clothed people and WE WERE BLESSED by these people!  Did I mention that it rained on the way to Harlem and it stopped as soon as we got there and the sun came out?  God is good…

We were each blessed with moments that have changed our lives forever…I would like to share something I was blessed with today.  I was on the street and Jo, who was serving in the bus, noticed a man reading the book “Words of Wisdom” and he was highlighting.  She flagged me over and said that she thought that man may like a Bible.  Jo got a Bible and I took it to him and asked him if he would like to have it.  He was so excited about receiving the Bible…I shared with him what Tim Ayers shared during one of his recent sermons.  If you didn’t hear that sermon I will recap…Tim shared that he likes to read the Proverb that corresponds with the date highlighting what touches him.  I shared this idea with this man.  So we determined the date, found Proverbs and he went to Proverb 26.  He began reading the verses and then he handed off to me.  We read all of Proverb 26 and he marked the verses that spoke to him.  Words can not describe what a moment this was with this man and how amazing it was to experience this daily devotional with him today.

The team was able to hand out the donations that we brought with us…a big thank you to many of you!  This evening we went to the projects and had the opportunity to see many kids.  It was really hard to comprehend these kids walking by themselves, in the dark, in this dangerous neighborhood.  We were able to give this kids coloring books, crayons, reading books, candy, toothbrushes and toothpaste.  Yes we realize it was ridiculous to give candy and dental hygiene together but Hailey made them each promise to brush their teeth after the candy.  :)   To be able to love them was amazing…

Well it has been a long day…I won’t go on and on.  What I want to share is that God is so good and he blessed us with the people we met today!  Both the people that we met on the streets and the amazing people that serve on the Relief Bus full time.  What amazing servants…Again thank you to all of you for your prayers during this trip.  God is definitely watching over us!

We are here safe and sound…

June 26, 2009

I had a hunch that yesterday may be a long day when at 4:00 a.m. I was getting ready to load my car to head to the airport and I set my alarm off.  The good news is that I have confirmed the police are dispatched when the alarm is activated…  :)

Our flight left at 6:30 a.m. and we safely arrived in New York in a Continental Chevette before lunch.  We were able to visit Ground Zero, Central Park and TImes Square.  At about 6:00 p.m. we headed to the bus station to head back to our hotel at which time we realized we had missed the 4:15 p.m. bus…that was the last bus to Elizabeth until 9:00 p.m.  :)   So we were able to experience the city at night!  We arrived back at the hotel about 10:00 p.m. which may explain why you haven’t heard from us until this morning…VERY TIRED last night.  :)

Leaving the city we were reminded of our purpose…we drove past a billboard that said, “Glad you are sitting down, there are over 15,000 homeless children in NYC.”  We head to the Hope Center this morning at 6:45 a.m…can’t wait to update everyone later on our day!

Thank you so much for the prayers everyone!  Have a wonderful day!
